This morning, Bill and Robbie's kindergarten read Donald Crews's picture book Ten Black Dots. It's a lovely book showing imaginative ways of transforming static black dots into familiar objects...
I'm the Lower School Math Specialist at Poughkeepsie Day School, a Pre-K-12 independent school in Poughkeepsie, NY (on the Hudson River, about halfway between Albany and New York City). Around school I'm generally known as the Friendly Neighborhood Math Guy. I present lessons, work with teachers to develop curriculum, and otherwise help keep the K-4 math program running.
In a previous life I taught various elementary grades. I'm also a writer with a number of books for kids and young adults to my credit, and I work extensively in educational publishing as well, putting together teacher guides, workbooks, and other resources for K-12 (and sometimes beyond). I've presented at NCTM conferences, most recently in Salt Lake City in 2008, and have worked with the education departments of both Marist and Vassar Colleges here in Poughkeepsie.
This blog is intended to showcase some of the projects the kids at PDS are doing, along with various hopefully-not-so-random thoughts about math, education, and children. Enjoy!
I can be reached at scurrie (at-sign) poughkeepsieday (dot) org.
